No smoking policy

1. Introduction

At Be. Independent Day Nursery, we are committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all children, staff, and visitors. This No Smoking Policy aims to promote the health and well-being of everyone associated with our nursery by prohibiting smoking on the premises.

2. Policy Statement

Be. Independent Day Nursery – Policies for Website, updated October 2024 Smoking (including e-cigarettes and vapes) is not permitted anywhere on the nursery premises, including:

  • Inside the building.
  • In outdoor areas, including playgrounds and gardens.
  • In vehicles parked on nursery property.

This policy applies to all staff, parents, visitors, and contractors.

3. Rationale

The purpose of this policy is to:

  • Protect children from the harmful effects of second-hand smoke.
  • Promote a healthy environment for children to learn and play.
  • Comply with the Health Act 2006, which prohibits smoking in enclosed public spaces and workplaces.
  • Set a positive example for children regarding healthy lifestyle choices.

4. Implementation

4.1 Communication

  • All staff, parents, and visitors will be informed of the No Smoking Policy upon entry to the nursery and during their induction or orientation.
  • Clear signage indicating that smoking is not permitted will be displayed prominently throughout the nursery premises.

4.2 Support for Staff and Parents

  • We understand that quitting smoking can be challenging. We will provide information about local support services and resources for those who wish to stop smoking.

5. Compliance and Enforcement

  • Staff are responsible for ensuring that this policy is enforced. They should remind individuals who violate the policy of the no smoking rule.
  • Any breaches of this policy will be addressed promptly and may lead to disciplinary action for staff or removal from the premises for visitors.
  • If staff choose to smoke or vape off-site, for example on their way to work or during lunch break, they must wear a protective layer of clothing on top of the clothing that is worn in the nursery, as well as wash hands and clean teeth before interacting with children at the setting.

6. Review of Policy

This No Smoking Policy will be reviewed annually or as necessary to ensure its effectiveness and compliance with current legislation.
